Barre star of the month: Alice

How do you feel your body has changed from Barre classes?
Barre has been such a game-changer in terms of the relationship I have with my body.  It has not only helped me build confidence but it has helped me listen to my body more and learn and respond to what it needs.  I have gained a lot of flexibility and balance.  It has helped lengthen and tone my muscles, and I have definitely gained core strength. It has also helped strengthen my mind/body connection. Even though my years of dance are well-behind me, I feel like I have gotten my dancer’s body back.
Barre has played a major role in helping me lose weight and keep it off.  When I work out consistently it influences what I eat and drink.  It’s harder to justify eating something super unhealthy after putting so much effort into a barre class. It has also been really helpful in terms of knee pain.  I was diagnosed with runner’s knee a few years ago and finding a lot of exercises to be way too hard on my knee. Barre has helped strengthen the muscles around my knee and is low-impact enough where I don’t feel like I am going to hurt myself.

What is your favorite part of coming to Barre Centric classes?
When I walk into class, I can feel my jaw relax and shoulders roll back. It is one of the few places where I don’t have to worry about all of life’s other stresses.  For that one hour of the day, the only concern is my body and my breathing. During the pandemic, barre has truly been a blessing.  Going to class gives me something to look forward to, and the online classes are perfect for days when I don’t feel like going out.  The virtual and in-person challenges really help keep me motivated and on track.   I also love the personalized attention that is offered (even in live online classes!) .  The instructors are always correcting form to ensure everyone gets the most out of their workout.
Gia and Rachel have done such an amazing job keeping everyone safe and motivated during the pandemic. The community vibe that Barre Centric offers is fantastic.  I have made so many friends over the years and met so many strong and remarkable women.  I hope at some point in the future I can go on a barre retreat and get to know everyone a little better.

Advice for anyone who is thinking about trying his or her first barre class?
Just do it!  All of the instructors are amazing, friendly, and welcoming. No one is judgmental and it isn’t an intimidating environment like some other gyms/studios can be. You don’t have to have dance experience to do it, and it’s low impact so you don’t have to worry about injuries.  And if your first class happens to be barre cardio (like mine was), don’t panic. They aren’t all that fast.
